A bathroom is the smallest room in the house and the least forgiving. Every millimetre is visible, every mistake sits at eye level, and unlike a kitchen, there is nowhere to hide a compromise. The vanity carries most of that weight, because it is the only piece of furniture in the room.
Most people start by choosing a look. That is the wrong end of the problem. The decisions that determine whether a vanity works are made earlier, and in a fairly strict order.
Start with the plumbing, because it decides the rest
Before any cabinet is drawn, find out where the water comes in and where the waste goes out. Two configurations matter.
A wall-connected waste, sometimes called an S-bend or P-trap depending on how it runs, exits through the wall behind the vanity. This is the easier one to design around, because the pipework sits high and out of the way of drawers.
A floor-connected waste comes up through the slab. It runs vertically through the middle of the cabinet, and it will eat into any drawer that crosses its path. Drawers can still be used, but they need to be notched or shortened around the pipe, and the drawer directly above the waste often becomes a shallow tray rather than a full box.
Nobody enjoys discovering this after the cabinet has been built. Photograph the existing pipework before demolition and again once the wall is open.
Floor standing, wall hung or freestanding
Floor standing vanities sit on a kickboard and are the most forgiving option in an older home, because the kickboard absorbs an uneven floor and the weight goes straight down.
Wall-hung vanities leave the floor clear, which makes a small bathroom read as larger and makes cleaning underneath far easier. The catch is structural. The load has to be carried by timber or steel blocking inside the wall, and that blocking must go in before the wall is lined and waterproofed. Deciding you want a wall-hung vanity after the plasterer has finished means opening the wall again.
Freestanding units suit a period style bathroom but give up the storage a built-in carcass provides. In a family bathroom, that is usually the wrong trade.
The numbers that matter
Height
Bathroom vanities have crept taller over the last two decades. Older Australian homes commonly sit around 800mm to the top of the bench. Newer work more often lands between 850 and 900mm, which is closer to kitchen bench height and easier on your back.
The basin type changes the maths. An undermount or inset basin sits within the benchtop, so the cabinet height and the finished height are close together. An above-counter basin adds its full height on top, so the cabinet has to drop to roughly 750 to 800mm, or the basin rim ends up under your chin. Choose the basin before fixing the cabinet height, not after.
Depth
Vanities are shallower than kitchen cabinets, typically 460 to 500mm against the 600mm standard used in a kitchen. That is deliberate. You lean over a vanity rather than working at it, and the extra depth would push you away from the mirror. Width
Common widths run 600, 750, 900, 1200 and 1500mm. A double basin needs at least 1200mm to avoid the two people using it standing shoulder to shoulder, and 1500mm is more comfortable. Below 900mm, a single drawer bank with a wall connected waste will store more than doors will.
Where moisture actually attacks a vanity
Not from the basin, usually. The damage comes from steam settling on horizontal surfaces, and from water tracking down the front of doors and sitting along the bottom edge.
That means the specification points that matter are the exposed edges and the base. Moisture-resistant board is the sensible minimum for a vanity carcass, and edge tape needs to be properly bonded on every cut edge, particularly the bottom of doors where water runs off. Ventilation does more than material choice. An exhaust fan that actually vents outside rather than into the roof cavity will extend the life of any vanity, in any material. If the mirror stays fogged for twenty minutes after a shower, the cabinetry is sitting in that same air.
Where the vanity sits in the build sequence
Waterproofing in Australian bathrooms is governed by AS 3740, currently the 2021 edition, which the National Construction Code accepts as a compliance pathway. It applies to renovations, not only new builds, and it categorises wet areas by how much water they are exposed to.
The practical consequence for cabinetry is simple. Waterproofing is done by the licensed waterproofer, then tiling, then the vanity goes in. Fixings that penetrate a completed membrane are where problems start, which is why blocking inside the wall has to be planned before the wall is closed up rather than improvised on install day.

Moisture-resistant board is the sensible baseline for a wet area. Beyond the substrate itself, look at how the edges are treated, because unsealed cut edges are where swelling begins. Ask specifically about the bottom edge of doors and the base of the carcass.
Can a vanity be made to fit an unusual or very narrow bathroom?
That is one of the main reasons to build custom rather than buy off the shelf. Standard units come in fixed widths, so an awkward space either wastes room on both sides or does not fit at all. A made-to-measure carcass can also be shaped around an existing waste pipe rather than surrendering a drawer to it.
Does the vanity go in before or after tiling?
After. Waterproofing first, then tiling, then the vanity. Installing cabinetry before the membrane and tiles risks damaging the waterproofing and almost always creates a sealing problem at the floor and wall junctions.
